50 years of diplomacy between Australia and Afghanistan
2019 is the Centenary of the Reclamation of Independence in Afghanistan and the 50th anniversary of diplomacy between Australia and Afghanistan.
His Excellency, Wahidullah Waissi, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Australia, grew up in Kabul before receiving a scholarship for postgraduate studies in the United States. The Ambassador was appointed in March of 2017. He speaks about the beginnings of formal diplomacy between Afghanistan and Australia.
“The first Ambassador of Afghanistan was originally covering Australia from Japan and presented credentials to the Australian government in 1969,” said Ambassador, Wahidullah Waissi.
“Afghans started to arrive in Australia in the 1860s, before the construction of the Adelaide-Darwin railroad communication line. Many lived in Alice Springs and married Aboriginal Australians.”
“The interpersonal relations started back in the 19th century and the diplomatic relationships started in 1969.”
Australia was a big supporter of Afghanistan from 2001 onwards, not militarily or security wise but in terms of development and female empowerment.
Afghanistan today has many groups moving to empower the population and counter terrorism and extremism.
“The recent election that we had was a demonstration that we practiced and we are practicing democracy in our country in terms of our future prosperity,” said the Ambassador, Wahidullah Waissi.
To mark the importance of 2019, the Ambassador assisted in organising an exciting performance by a young group of Afghan musicians from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music. Zohra All Female Orchestra is set to tour Australia in October 2019.
“Zohra Orchestra’s Australian tour provides audiences with the opportunity to attain an extremely unique musical experience, whilst simultaneously supporting the development of people-to-people and cultural links between Australia and Afghanistan.”
It is a showcase of the resilience and determination of Afghan youth and women to continue fighting for their rights and carry their country from strength to strength.
