The latest American and Canadian flicks at the Sydney Film Festival 2019

The full program for the Sydney Film Festival 2019 has officially been released and the line-up is more exciting than ever.

The festival will present 307 films from over 55 countries including 33 World Premieres, bringing together hundreds of international and local stories. There are 112 feature films, including prize-winners from prestigious festivals around the world; and 79 documentaries tackling crucial contemporary issues, from established and upcoming documentarians.

From June 5-16, cinemas across Sydney will showcase the best films the world has to offer, with the Harbour City playing host to an array of special guests as part of the exciting program.

In anticipation of the upcoming festival, we’ve shortlisted five of the films out of USA and Canada that we absolutely can’t wait to watch on the big screen!

American Woman (USA)

Sienna Miller (FoxcatcherHigh-Rise) gives a career-best performance in this captivating drama about a woman forced to deal with her teenage daughter’s disappearance. Also featuring tremendous performances by Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), American Woman spans decades as it tells the moving and inspirational story of Deb (Miller).

Ghost Town Anthology (Canada)

Canadian maverick Denis Côté (Vic + Flo Saw a Bear SFF 2013, Joy of Man’s Desiring SFF 2014) returns with a beguiling tale set in a grief-stricken Québécois village. Filmed in grainy 16mm and featuring superb sound design, Ghost Town Anthology takes place in Irénée-les-Neiges, population 215. The violent death of 21-year-old Simon Dubé has affected everyone and left his family shattered.

The Public (USA)

Emilio Estevez directs and acts alongside Alec Baldwin, Jena Malone, Christian Slater and Michael K. Williams in this heart-warming film about homeless people who occupy a library to escape freezing conditions. Inspired by the notion that libraries have become far more than places to borrow books, Estevez (BobbyThe Way) has crafted a humane, funny and moving film about people choosing kindness over apathy.

Ringside (USA)

Shot over eight years, Ringside captures the travails and triumphs of two young would-be professional boxers from Chicago’s volatile and impoverished South Side. Ringside, which premiered this year in the prestigious Berlinale Generation 14plus strand, is an affecting exploration of family, life choices and hurdles in a volatile world.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (USA)

The sassy, furry friends of 2016’s animated smash hit return for a Red Carpet Australian Premiere featuring festival guests Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. Packed with subversive and irreverent humour that will delight both kids and adults, The Secret Life of Pets 2 is a hilarious visit back to the world of Max, Snowball and the gang.
