462 medals up for grabs at Asian Games 2018

Now in its eighteenth year, the Asian Games 2018 Jakarta-Palembang is a pan-Asian multi-sport event and is scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in Indonesia. This is the first time the event is hosted by a combination of two cities, with events also being hosted in surrounding areas.

The Asian Games started in 1951 in New Delhi and only featured 41 athletes from 11 national Olympic Committees, and featured six sports. This year, all 45 members of the Olympic Council of Asia are expected to compete, and the athletes village has well-exceeded the Olympic standard to house 22,272 athletes.

The official committee that been organising the event has been called the Indonesia Asian Games Organising Committee, or INASGOC, and was formed following a meeting in Korea after Vietnam withdrew from hosting the event.

Over the course of the games, a total of 462 medals will be awarded in 47 sports.
