Five Turkish soap operas that will have you hooked from start to end

The Turkish community aren’t the only ones who love and obsess over Turkish soap operas.

During the last decade there has been a massive surge of popularity towards these dramas, making them international sensations.

Although Turkish TV series are amidst the longest (reaching 120 to 150 minutes in length per episode), Turkey is the second biggest TV series exporter after the US.

Globally, viewers ache for the forlorn or forbidden love stories which seem to spotlight the soap operas.

Ask ve Ceza (2010 – 2011)

Ask ve Ceza (otherwise known as Love and Punishment) is a story concerning a young woman Yasemin who discovers her fiancé’s infidelity and in an attempt to forget her sorrows, goes to a bar where she meets the protagonist Savas.

This series highlights important topics that many of the characters struggle with including chastity and regret, strict Turkish customs and traditions, and love and revenge.

 

Adını Feriha Koydum (2011 – 2012)

Adini Feriha Koydum (otherwise known as I Named Her Feriha) narrates the life of a poor, young girl who lives as the daughter of a doorkeeper to a wealthy family.

The series follows Feriha as she studies at university and meets rich, playboy Emir. This is a love at first sight story where Emir falls for Feriha at first glance.

This show was dubbed and broadcasted worldwide and was very popular in Bulgaria, Russia and India.

 

 

Merhamet (2013 – 2014)

Merhamet (translates to Mercy) tells the story of an unforgettable childhood love that forces the couple to split under difficult situations.

Narin underwent physical and verbal abusive as well as poverty through-out her childhood due to her violent and unpredictable father.

Thirteen years later, she is a successful lawyer, yet still unhappy as she mourns the loss of her childhood love and family members whom she deserted.

 

Cilek Kokusu (2015)

Cilek Kokusu (translated to Strawberry Smell) is one of the more comedic series on the list and the shortest with a total of 23 episodes.

This series features one of the funniest duos in any Turkish soap operas. Female lead Asli is the only child to her poor, single mother while Burak is the only son of a wealthy and powerful couple in Turkey.

Due to many unfortunate and comedic incidents, the couple keep crossing paths and although they can’t stand each other at first, fate has other plans.

 

Kara Sevda (2015 – 2017)

Kara Sevda (otherwise known as Endless Love) is a heart-stopping romantic series that follows the life of Nihan and Kemal as they face never-ending struggles to keep their love together.

Nihan is a young, rich woman who falls in love with hard-working Kemal. Their love deals with the constant threat of arrogant businessman Emir who has an unhealthy obsession with Nihan.
