India Day Fair 2018 set to be biggest FIAN event yet

The Federation of Indian Associations of New South Wales (FIAN) will be hosting their fourth India Day Fair on August 11, 2018, in celebration of Indian culture, Indian Independence Day and multiculturalism in Australia.

President of FIAN Dr Yadu Singh said the event is set to be their biggest and best yet, and he estimates more than 20,000 people will attend the celebrations at Parramatta Park (Car Park area, next to Parramatta Stadium off O’connell Street) throughout the day.

In addition to our usual awesome cultural performances, food, stalls and fireworks, this year we have Punjabi singer, Surinder Laddi, coming from India to perform live at our India Day Fair for the first time.

“He is very popular and he is coming to Sydney to perform at India Day Fair, so it’ll be new, special and it’s going to be a hugely attractive part of the fair,” Dr Singh said.

“It’s going to be the most successful event we have held since 2015 and it’s going to keep growing and I have a feeling this event will be the biggest and best event we have ever held.”

FIAN was established in April 2015 in response to the growing Indian community. According to the 2016 national census, there were over 238,000 people of Indian ancestry living in New South Wales, with around 220,000 of those living in the greater Sydney region alone.

Dr Singh was appointed as the President of the association in 2015 and has been involved in a number of projects and activities since. Read more about his and the organisation’s community involvement on his blog HERE.

Many people felt there was a need for a productive, performing and community-focused group which can do things for and in the community.

“FIAN is non-partisan and is not linked with any political party, and one of our agendas is that we want community groups to be non-partisan and not linked with political parties as well,” Dr Singh explained.

“We are hugely networked throughout the community and it is shown through our successful partnerships with businesses and our events and activities.”
