Priya Serrao: How Miss Universe Australia 2019 plans to put her crown to good use

Recently crowned Miss Universe Australia 2019, Priya Serrao is in the midst of planning exactly how she will be putting her new title to use in the coming years.

However, one thing remains clear – she is sure she wants to use it for positive change, both in Australia and overseas.

With one foot in the government and another in the media, Priya said she hopes she can use her platform to create greater awareness of the world’s diversity, a topic close to home after she and her family experienced racial intolerance upon first arriving in Australia.

“We had no idea what to talk to our friends about, and we would often get picked on for our accents or what we ate,” she explained.

This was a stark contrast to her experience of moving from India to the Middle East.

“In Dubai, because there’s a huge Indian diaspora there, and there are also people from places like Pakistan, we had a lot in common and I didn’t feel too out of place, and I felt we could bond over a similar upbringing,” she said.

Having grown up in India and also having spent a lot of time with the India diaspora in Dubai, I had always felt a strong connection with my Indian background.

“There were definitely a lot of commonalities in the Middle East, but when you come to a place like Australia, it’s a very starkly different culture.”

Making good on her mission, Priya has recently joined forces with Melbourne-based not-for-profit Possible Dreams International, with which she has recently held diversity workshops at local schools.

Priya also currently works as a Policy Advisor with the Victorian state government, an interest that stemmed from her experiences of having lived abroad in a number of countries.

“It was the fact that I’d lived in so many places, so it meant that I always had an interest in international studies, cross-country relationships and cross-cultural ideas,” she explained.

“Going forward, because I work in the government, I’m quite interested in different international aspects, in particular, the India-Australia relationship, so I’m really trying to apply myself there.”

In the meantime, Priya continues to look for opportunities where she can make the greatest change, often asking herself:

How can I combine my skills and the situation that I’m in to add the most value to society?
