Popular Venezuelan restaurant Arepa celebrates another successful year of bringing their street food delights to Sydney.

After dishing out their delicious Arepas at markets for three years, the Venezuelan owners found a permanent home for their menu in Enmore close to a year ago; a restaurant that is dedicated to serving their rendition of the passed-down recipe.

“Every mother [in Venezuela] teaches their kids how to make Arepas, everyone knows how to,” said Kysbel Castellanos, one of the founders of Arepa.

While focusing on traditional Venezuelan techniques, Castellanos said they try to incorporate some flavours that are more favourable with the wider Australian public.

One of their fusion-style offerings is the pulled pork, however, they also offer more traditional recipes from Venezuela, such as the vegetarian option made up of black beans, feta cheese, and avocado sauce.

Many of Arepa’s regular customers are Sydney-based Latin Americans, who find often comfort in their restaurant’s home-away-from-home atmosphere.

“The biggest community we have are the Colombians in Sydney,” says Castellanos.

It’s quite a large community and they love it, every time they come to our restaurant they are so happy.

Before coming to Australia, Castellanos was studying computer engineering in Venezuela, and her plan was to move to Australia and get a job within that industry.

However, while learning English after making the move to Sydney, she would often host dinner parties and invite many of her Australian friends, who loved her Arepas.

The positive feedback was enough to inspire her to take a chance on the food market, and along with co-owners Alberto Ferreira and Andres Rodriguez, they began selling Arepas at small markets across the city.

“With that and all the events we were running, we started looking for our permanent place, and we spent five or six months looking for it, until we found the one we are at now,” Castellanos said.

At present, the restaurant only features its popular and well sought-out “healthy” Arepas, but will soon launch a new item on the menu.

Their new Empanadas will make their debut on June 11, 2019, with a $1 special for the first 100 customers only.
