Former Titans player Kevin Gordon turns to music

Known as Kevin “the Flash” Gordon among loyal fans of the Gold Coast Titans National Rugby League (NRL) team, the former winger now wants to be remembered as Deep Gordon, the stage name for his recently released album, The Album of the Year.

The self-produced album is made up of eleven songs with no regard for fitting in, as his website states, and that Kevin says is completely representative of himself.

“I get to express myself in this form and I was worried about how people were going to take it,” he said.

“But, at the same time, I really don’t care, because it’s a release of my energy into the universe and it needed to be done.”

Prior to his music career, Kevin was one of the Gold Coast Titans’ key players from 2009 when he made his debut in the NRL in a match against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, finishing the year as the team’s top try-scorer with 13 tries in 23 matches.

With Filipino roots, Kevin has also represented the Philippines twice; once with the Philippine National Rugby League in 2012, and more recently, coming out of retirement to play for the Philippine Rugby Union Team in 2017.

Kevin played in the NRL until 2015, remaining with the Titans throughout this period, having been forced to retire due to recurring injuries.

“Retiring was probably one of the biggest decisions I have ever made,” Kevin explained.

Towards the end of my career, there were a few signs there telling me my time was up.

“I would sometimes even be out having a beer and just thinking to myself, and questioning why I was still playing.”

Following his retirement, Kevin decided to pursue his other passion of acting, where he spent eight months studying in Los Angeles, before working in the American city for another six months.

He said this experience was good for him to take a break from the sporting world, and to truly find out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, before coming back to Australia to make music in his Gold Coast home studio.

It’s very different, explicit, unique, deep and it’s different because it’s sort of like just me expressing myself.

“It’s my own genre, I call it self-expression,” he said.

His favourite song on the album is called “Probably got Schizophrenia” and you can listen to it HERE.
