CulturalPulse 2019 Vivo IPL Wrap-Up: Week 1

The 2019 Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off in style on Saturday, March 23.

With just a few months until the ICC World Cup, the players are pumped up, and teams look more confirmed than they ever have. Here’s our first weekly review of the games held on the opening weekend, followed by some key updates on exciting games to watch.

Game 1: Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore
Date: Saturday March 23, 2019
Location: Chinnaswamy Stadium

Still taken from official IPL match highlights

Well… what a way to start the Vivo IPL 2019. Team Dhoni v Team Kolhi… The two biggest superstars in Indian cricket went head-to-head in the opening game.

M.S. Dhoni won the toss and put King Kolhi’s team to bat first. One would think this game would have been an exciting, high scoring one – however, it was not.

It was a bit disappointing for many cricket fans, specifically fans of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, to see their team be the victim of a batting collapse in the opening game. With Parthiv Patel being the top scorer with 29 of 35 balls, the Super Kings wrapped the Challengers up for 70 and chased the target easily with seven wickets in hand.

Game 2: Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kolkata Knight Riders
Date: Sunday March 24, 2019
Location: Eden Gardens

Still taken from official IPL match highlights

After a disappointing first match, IPL fans got to see some fireworks in this cracker of a game.

Dinesh Karthik won the toss and chose to field. The Sunrisers got off to a flying start with David Warner stamping his authority with an 85 from 53 balls, a dream come true comeback for him.

With the top order rising to the occasion, Sunrisers Hyderabad finished with a match-winning score of 181, with the loss of just three wickets. In response, the Knight Riders had a shaky start with Chris Lynn falling early to the magic man from Afghanistan, Rashid Khan.

Nitish Rana and Robin Uthappa held the innings from there; however, they were chasing a big total and it looked unlikely right until the end of the match. With approximately 68 runs needed off 30 balls, it started looking like a mammoth task, however, it wasn’t over yet.

Andre Russell, and the Man of the Series of the Under 19 World Cup, young Shubman Gill exploded in the end and it started raining sixes. Both Russell & Gill finished the game with two balls to spare, and the match was an absolute thriller for all fans watching.

Game 3: Mumbai Indians v Delhi Capitals
Date: Sunday March 24, 2019
Location: Wankhede Stadium

Still taken from official IPL match highlights

After a disappointing season last year, the Mumbai Indians were looking to redeem themselves in their opening game of the season. On the other hand, team Delhi Capitals were hoping their team name change brings them some luck, after years of struggle in the IPL.

Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. The start of the day saw a solid batting performance by the Delhi Capitals from the young Rishabh Pant. He not only got 50 of just 18 balls, but basically took the game away from the home team. He finished at 78 of just 27 balls, leaving team Delhi with a commanding total of 213.

Chasing a big total like 213 is always hard for any team and the Indians struggled to keep up with the run rate from the very beginning. With Yuvraj Singh being the highest scorer (53) for the Indians, they were all out for 176 of 19.2 overs. It’s a dream start for the Capitals.
