CulturalPulse 2019 Vivo IPL Wrap-Up: Week 4

As we get to the business end of the Vivo IPL 2019, the excitement has been doubling. Last week, drama unfolded across many matches, including a controversial no-ball decision that even got a reaction out of captain-cool MS Dhoni. We also finally saw a win for the Royal Challengers Bangalore after a series of losses, and a nail-biting finish between Mumbai and Punjab.

Game 24: Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab

Location: Wankhede Stadium

The fill-in captain for Mumbai, Polly (Kieron Pollard) won the toss and elected to bowl. We’re not entirely sure if this was a good decision.

The Kings XI had a gunning start with the GayleStorm hitting early on. He got a 63 of just 36 balls. After Gayle got out, KL Rahul took over and ended up with a heroic 100 of 64 balls. What an innings! The Kings XI ended up at 197 for 4 – definitely a match-winning total.

Mumbai Indians had a semi decent start with Quinton de Kock (24), Siddhesh Lad (15), and Suryakumar Yadav (21). When the total started looking extremely hard to chase and fans at home and in the stadium started losing hope, veteran Kieron Polly walks in. Not only did he single-handedly get his team home, he scored an 83 of just 31 balls. He smashed 10 sixes and chased a near-impossible total to get his team an important win.

Mumbai Indians won the match by three wickets (zero balls left). A nail-biting last ball finish that went Mumbai’s way, thanks to standing captain Keiron Pollard.

Game 25: Rajasthan Royals v Chennai Super Kings
Date: Friday April 12, 2019
Location: Sawai Mansingh Stadium

Still taken from official IPL match highlights

It’s always great to watch a Chennai Super Kings game.

The Kings won the toss and decided to bowl first. The Royals got off to a semi-decent start and it was a very average batting performance where almost the entire team contributed. Ben Stokes was the highest scorer (28 of 26 balls). Definitely not a great total, however it is defendable.

It was a nightmare of a start for the Super Kings. They lost the inform Shane Watson in the very first over and Suresh Raina got run out in the second. Rahul Tripathi took an absolute screamer on the boundary to dismiss Du Plessis, and CSK were now 15 for 3 – and in all sorts of trouble. Another screamer of a catch taken by Ben Stokes at point to dismiss Kedar Jadhav.

The Royals were on a roll. At 24 for 4, captain-cool MC Dhoni walks in, and slowly and steadily starts building a partnership with Ambati Rayudu. Both batted well and got their 50’s.

This ended up being a nail-biting finish and CSK won the match on the last ball. We also saw a no-ball decision reversed by the empire, which got Dhoni to walk out to the pitch and have a chat with the umpires.

Game 28: Kings XI Punjab v Royal Challengers Bangalore
Date: Sunday April 14, 2019
Location: Punjab Cricket Association Stadium

Still taken from official IPL match highlights

So far the Vivo IPL 2019 has been extremely disappointing for Royal Challengers Bangalore fans. After six consecutive losses, and zero wins on the board, the Challengers looked low on confidence and morale.

RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Kings XI had a gun start, thanks to the Gayle Storm, yet again. He got a 99 of 64 balls, and the team ended up at a respectable total of 173.

RCB had a decent start and the top order batted well, specifically King Kolhi,  who was leading by example. A calm and composed innings, the skipper ended up with 67 of 53 balls and AB de Villiers got 59 of just 38 balls to get RCB home. This would have been a huge sigh of relief for the dressing room, team, team owners, and most importantly the RCB fans.

Royal Challengers won the match by eight wickets. Will they move from a losing streak to a winning streak to get into the play-offs? Let’s wait and see!
