Jaipur Literature Festival returns to Adelaide

In November 2019, Adelaide Festival Centre will be home to the second Jaipur Literature Festival in Australia. The festival, run by OzAsia, has expanded its reach from India to now also include authors from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Jaipur Literature Festival is an annual literary extravaganza produced by Teamwork Arts and held in Rajasthan, India.

Festival Advisor Laura Kroetsch said she is really looking forward to being involved in conversation with authors Hannah Kent, Namita Gokhale and Intan Paramaditha on the topic of Witches, Women and Power.

“We’re going to be talking about myth and genre, and what’s interesting is that across cultures, different versions of vilifying women has happened,” she said.

“I think the same thing can be said about gender, race and sexuality.

“I think we share a common humanity but the cultural, the social and the economic realities of where people live can radically differ.

When you see a human being telling their story, it humanises that and it challenges your preconceptions.

Jaipur Literature Festival will celebrate the stories and heritage of South Asia while reflecting a global view of contemporary literature and critical thought.

Laura also highlighted one of the guest speakers, James Crabtree, who is a British journalist living in Singapore and author of The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India’s New Gilded Age.

His book is a vivid account of a divided society on the cusp of transformation – and a struggle that will shape not just India’s future, but the world’s.

The themes within his publication are very topical and the Festival will engage with political discussion as well as literary discussion.

The stories will be available in their original languages and English translations available where possible for Australian attendees.

The festival aims to foster Asian-Australian relationships and has a series of exciting speakers lined up. Check out the full itinerary HERE
