United through Football: Team Peru

In celebration of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we asked some of our community ambassadors to talk to us about their national teams. Mariafe Artacho del Solar’s love of beach volleyball began when she was living in Peru. When she moved to Australia at the age of 11, her love of the sport continued to grow. She has since represented Australia in a number of international competitions, including the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and  the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games where she won a silver medal. Hear how Mariafe felt when Peru qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 36 years!

What is your role in the community?
I love to inspire others. Giving back to the community for me is important, i like to lead by example on and off the court and be a role model for the young generation as well as people in general.

Who is your favourite Peruvian player and why?
I don’t really have one in particular haha I only remember Farfán from when I was younger. They’re all new players.

If there was only one destination in Peru to visit, what would it be and why?
You can’t really pick one. Peru is very unique as it has a Coast, the Andes and also the jungle. It’s food is to die for and there’s lots of beautiful places to visit.

Vegemite is the food Australians love. What is Peru’s “Vegemite”?
Ahhhh! Manjar blanco maybe? So many different types of delicious treats both sweet and savoury that i wouldn’t be able to pick one.
